Volunteers to build new oyster reef at Schultz Nature Preserve

Between Thursday and Saturday, an anticipated 80 volunteers will shovel approximately 14 tons of fossilized oyster shells into mesh bags, and then transport each bag by outboard motorboat and place it on the shoreline of the island to build the... Community volunteers will help Tampa Bay Watch, the Tampa Chapter of the Coastal Conservation Association, and the Hillsborough County Department of Environmental Protection create a new oyster shell reef habitat along the shoreline of Schultz... The project is the first of eight new oyster shell bars, totaling 1,850 linear feet, to be installed on the shoreline of Schultz Preserve over the next two years. Oyster bars along natural shoreline offer a buffer against wave action, and reverse or reduce current erosion rates. They also create foraging areas for the many species of fish and birds in the area.
